Power & Telephone Relocations
Recreation Plan

a. Cumulative Impacts of the Components

(1) Of the 37,756 total acres of land to be acquired for
the Project, 2,449 acres were required for Ruedi Dam and
Reservoir of which 1,761 acres were purchased from 37
private owners by the Bureau of Reclamation. The balance
of this land was withdrawn from other governmental agencies.
The purchase of private land for Project purposes represents
a decrease in county tax revenue for Pitkin and Eagle Counties.

(2) Eleven families had to be relocated from the Ruedi Dam
and Reservoir area and home sewage systems consisting pri-
marily of outhouses, septic tanks and leaching fields had
to be disposed of in accordance with state regulations so
pollutants would not be introduced into the reservoir.

.

(3) There were 9 houses and 3l cabins, sheds and outbuildings
dismantled and removed from the Ruedi site. The town of
Meredith itself, consisting of less than 30 pcupl~, i~~l~di~g
those mentioned above, was relocated. The area is now the
location of Reclamation's Meredith Field Office.

(4) The clearing. of vegetation consisted of 977 acres for
the dam, reservoir and Meredith Field Office. Additional
clearing included about 70 acres for the roadway, 14 acres
for relocation of a REA transmission line and 51 acres for
the recreation facilities at the reservoir site. Most of
the clearing consisted of conifers and aspen on the north
facing slopes adjacent to the south side of the former
Fryingpan River channel. The rest of the clearing consisted
of scattered conifers and brush, as illustrated in Figure
UI-24, "Ruedi Reservoir Vegetative Types." The clearing
temporarily subjected the land to water and wind erosion.
This caused the loss of a portion of the "A" horizon of the
soil which is essential to plant establishment and growth,

.

IV-51
