----
~--

~

.'

provide the data necessary for a Biological Opinion on the operation of
the Aspinall Unit.

The data collected as part of this study will also give considerable
insight into the reproductive ecology and habitat requirements of the
endangered fishes. In addition, interactions between native and
introduced fish species will be investigated. These data are necessary
to formulate effective management strategies for the endangered fishes of
the Colorado River basin.

Ill. Study Goals, Objectives, End Product:
A. Goal:

Make seasonal flow recommendations for operation of the Aspinall Unit
by 1997.

B. Objectives:

I. Track the reproductive success of endangered fish and other
species in the Gunnison and Colorado rivers, and determine the
relationship between flow and spawning success of endangered fish
and other fish species.

2. Evaluate recruitment of endangered fish from age 0 to subsequent
life history stages and determine the relationship between
seasonal flows and survival of young fish.

3. Monitor the relative abundance and population structure of
endangered fishes and sympatric species to acquire information on
interactions between species and how flows may differentially
effect species.

4. Determine the relationship between quality and quantity of
important habitat types and seasonal flows of various levels.

C. End Product:

Biologically-based, seasonal flow recommendations for the Aspinall
Unit that will benefit endangered and native fish species.

IV. Study Area:

The study area includes the Gunnison River from Delta, CO downstream to
its confluence with the Colorado River, and the Colorado River from
Palisade, CO downstream to the Lake Powell inflow area.

V. Study Methods/Approach

McAda and Kaeding (1991) summarized the major changes to the Gunnison and
Colorado rivers resulting from construction and operation of the Aspinall

2
