I

diameter x l2-foot long stainless steel (Johnson Type) screen. The slot

opening size in the screens is 0.25-inch and the maximum approach velocity

is 0.5 feet-per-second. The approach velocity in this case is measured

less than 1 inch from the screen surface. The passive design of these

intake screens assures a uniform velocity distribution across the screen

surface. This reduces the attractive forces associated with high veloci-

ties and thus improves screen dependability and minimizes maintenance

cas ts.

I
I

I

I

I

Each screen will include an airburst system for cleaning. The airburst

systems will be connected to air tanks at the pumping plant. Three

bulkhead gates will be provided for installation at the pumping plant bay

entrances for maintenance of the bays. There would normally be 15 to 25

feet of head at the top of these gates. Drawing No. 922-600-204 shows the

pumping plant.

I
I
I

The discharge from the 12 pump units will be merged by a concrete encased

l2-branch manifold into a single discharge line, 120 inches in diameter and

I

9,785 feet long. A surge chamber approximately 30 feet in diameter will be
provided at the top of the hill above the pumping plant. Taps will be
i neluded in the discharge line to provide service to lands adjacent to the

I

discharge line.

I

Main Canal

I

The main canal will start at the end of the North Bay discharge line. A

Parshall flume will provide measurement of water entering the canal from

the discharge line. The water surface elevation of the main canal at the

discharge structure of the pumping plant will be 1502. The main canal

would traverse a side hill in a northeasterly direction for about the first

6V2 miles of its route. The canal will continue in an easterly direction

until it branches about 2 miles southeast o~ Ravinia. The branch that

flows north is called the North Branch Canal. A Parshall flume would be

located on the main canal here for me~surement. From there, the main canal

will follow sect ion lines and the old Milwaukee Railroad right-of-way to

the end at Wagner Relift Plant. The main canal capacity will vary from 710

I

I

I

I

I

36

I
