4. The district indicated that the proposed canal route for the

35,000-acre project would probably not be acceptable because it crosses

a significant amount of lands which would not be served by the project.

It was agreed that alternative canal routes should be considered which

would better avoid non-project lands.

I
I

With these concerns in mind, alternative canal routes to serVe the project

lands west of Choteau Creek were examined. The acreage to be served was

reduced from 35,000 to around 27,000.

I
I

1. All lands with excessive drainage costs were excluded from the
project area.

I
I
I
I
I
I

This reduction in acres 'is based on the following analysis:

2. Center pivots are'the most economical and acceptable method to

sprinkle quarter sect ions, especially since corn is the major crop.

Therefore, it was assumed that 135-acre pivots would be used to serve

160-acre tracts of land, for a total of 12,015 acres west of

Choteau Creek. All irregular land tracts smaller than 120 acres would

probably be served by wheel line or sQme other type of sprinkler

system. It was assumed that 92 perce~t of the land within irregular

tracts would be provided water.

I
I
I

The most expensive blocks of land to serve would be those requiring relift

plants. Therefore, an incremental analysts was done for the block of land

northwest of Lake Andes, whiCh requ~res the highest relift and about a

3-mile discharge pipe around the west endjof Lake Andes. The incremental

analysis showed that serving this block 'of land was ,incrementally feasible;

therefore, incremental analysis of less expensive relift areas was not

necessary for lands west of Choteau Creek.

I
I

The following paragraphs describe the
formulat10n for lands west of'Choteau

altbrnatives developed during plan
,
Creek. The three alternatives are

I
I

displayed in Drawing 922~600-240.

20

I
I
