KANSAS 66612 <br /> <br />To Those Receiving Technical Report Number 6A: <br /> <br />This report is another in the continuing series of technical reports <br />prepared as a part of the cooperative analytical program of the <br />Kansas Water Resources Board and the Surface Water Branch of the <br />U.S. Geological Survey. Only the basic data phase of the over-all <br />base flow investigation is included in the report. Future parts will <br />provide information on probability distributions, recession rates, <br />and other characteristics of base flow. <br /> <br />The report includes tables of base flow and total flow by months <br />for the period of record at 84 stream gaging stations in Kansas and <br />adjoining areas. Also tabulated are the estimated values of base <br />flow and total flow which extend the shorter records to a common <br />length of record. <br /> <br />Base flow is one of the primary components of stream flow; the other <br />being direct runoff. Direct runoff is the immediate result of <br />precipitation and is called other names such as storm runoff, surface <br />runoff, and flood water. Base flow, on the other hand, reaches the <br />stream via the ground and, therefore, the capacity of the ground to <br />store and transmit water in addition to precipitation influences the <br />magnitude of base flow. Base flow is observed in the streams when <br />rainfall has not occurred for some time and has also been termed <br />drouth flow, sustained flow, low flow, fair weather runoff, and <br />ground water runoff. Many water users are dependent upon base <br />flow for their supply, especially during low-flow periods. Deter- <br />mining the amount of base flow and its variation is useful in evaluat- <br />ing the adequacy of water supply sources and in estimating the effect <br />of future water development projects on such supplies. <br /> <br /> <br />'"~~~ tff:J <br />,~~.- ~ <br /> <br />Executive Secretary <br />
