22

PRESENTATION OF DATA

In prior sections the meaning and uses of base-flow and direct-runoff
data have been discussed and the technique used for separating base flow
from total flow has been described. Data on base flow, total flow, and di-
rect runoff for 84 gaging stations in or near Kansas are presented in this
section.

The data and explanations ~re presented in two separate parts. The
first part presents the data for ti.e period of record and summaries for
the base period, generally 1923-62 (1929-32, 1937-62 for stations in north-
west Kansas). The second part presents the two-thirds chance limits of
likely values of base flow and total flow for that period necessary to extend
the listings for each station to the full base period. A discussion of the
concept of a base period is presented in part 6B of this technical series.

Data For Period of Recorded Streamflow

Tables of monthly and annual base flow and total flow, their mean val-
ues for the period of record and the base period, and the mean value of
direct runoff for the base period are presented in this section. Informa-
tion of the gaging stations is also presented. The data are presented on a
water-year basis, October 1 to September 30.

The order of presentation corresponds to that in the surface-water re-
ports of the U.S. Geological Survey as well as to the other reports in this
technical series. The stations are referenced by numbers shown in the
general location map (fig. 1) and in the inventory of available data (table 1).
The number in parentheses following the station name at the head of each
station description is the nationwide station identification number estab-
lished for coding purposes by the Geological Survey.

The description of the station includes the location, drainage area, re-
cords analyzed, average base flow, extremes of base flow, and pertinent
reInarks.

Location describes the site in use September 30, 1962 or the latest
site if the station had been discontinued.

Drainage area is the total area within the basin and is based on the
best available sources of information. For stations operated at more than
one site with comparable records, the drainage area is for the latest site.
