~, <
. ~ ... ~

.

'.

fit:'71

- 8

c"

turn in the power plant far below. From the reservoir a thirty inch
wood stave pipeline snakes its way toward the plant four or five miles
away. In making the journey it crosses seven bridges 50 to 360 feet
long, and 10 to 35 feet high, and at one point crawling through a
1500 foot 6 X 9 tunnel driven through solid granite. From where the
wood stave line ends at the landing stage of the tram, a steel pipe

line carries the water to the plant, passing along the same route, but
under the rails of the tram. There is a lot of horsepower hidden in
that thir~y inch slug of water! When it gets to the plant, the steel
pipe is holding a pressure of 480 pounds per square inch. In order to
withstand this mighty. surge of power, the thickness of the pipe has
been increased fr~m 3/16 of an inch at the top, to 7/8 of an inch at
( point of delivery.

,

Two families live at Skaguay on the one quarter acre spot that has

been plasted out of the mountain side. This is the entire working force

necessary to operate the plant. Every pound of supplies comes to them

over the narrow tram. Every visitor comes - and goes, the same way.
When deep ,snow fills the canyon, they are held captive until it can
thaw. One stretch is on record in which nothing came in or out of there
from December 16th until the following March 20th. One employee is on
record as having spent 18 months at the plant, without going out on top.
Around the three cottages there are flowers, and grass, and shrubs. It
is hard to believe that every ounce of earth necessary to support these

.

.

c.

growing ,things, was transported from above over this tram. When you look

down on this green spot from the heights it looks like a deserted place.

No belching smoke stack sticks up from.the plant building. No wisp of

ii.'

-
