Pat Schroeder, D- <br />Colo" got Denver Water Board leaders togelher <br />with federal officials and environmental groups <br />Tuesday in an attempt to nail down funding as- <br />sistance for a Denver water re-use project. <br />In Ihe morning Denver officials met with <br />administrators of the U.S. Environmental <br />Protection Agency. In Ihe afternoon they talked <br />with spokesmen for private environmental <br />groups, including Ihe Sierra Club, Environmen- <br />tal Policy Center,lzaak Walton League and Na. <br />tional Audubon Society. <br />Denver water officials at times have warred. <br />with EP A and the private environmental groups, <br />but Hep, Schroeder said she was encouraged by. <br />the Tuesday sessions. <br />, EP A will have available $8 million for demon- <br />strations of water re-use, both in agricultural <br />and urban applications. Denver hopes to get at <br /> <br />, (~.. ..,,,..,,,... :..".._..#", <br /> <br />least half the money to help pay for a $20 million, <br />million-gallon-a-day demonstration facility, <br />EPA Administrator Douglas'Coslle and <br />Deputy Administrator Barbara Blum agreed to <br />set up a team to meet with Denver officials in the <br />next few weeks to discuss the Denver project in <br />detail, Rep. Schroeder said, and environmental <br />spokesmen indicated support for the project. <br />Present from Denver were James Kenney, a <br />water hoard member; James Ogilvie, secretary- <br />manager of the water department, and Stephen <br />Work, director of water resources policy. <br />'!be federal funds become available in Octo- <br />ber. <br />The Denver plant could be brought on line in <br />three years, Rep, Schroeder said, and would re- <br />main in operation for 10 years. <br />The estimated cost is for construction and <br />operations, In the long MID, the water board <br />would contribute $6 million and would expect to <br />get the balance from the federal government. <br /> <br />. _ It , -_f! <br />- . - ," <br /> <br /> <br />00644 <br />
