ABSTRACT: Evaluation of the impacts of. water quality in the Colorado River
is of incr~asirtg concern to policymaR.ers, resource planners, and the general
public, As development and utilizati~n of this resource continue, the qual-
ity of water will degrade, resulting in increased negative impacts. Until'
recently, evaluation of the impacts associated wi'th changing levels of TDS
(total diS~olved solids) has not been included in economicanaJyses of
future wat~r-related projects. In 1974, Water and Power economists prepared
a preliminary analysis of the economic impacts of salinity in the Colorado
River Basin. Major salinity impacts were ident:i:fied and evaluated, bU.t
because of! limit;ed time and resources, a more in_depth analysis was reCOlI)-
ended.. . SL.bs.equent.ly, substantial. efforts' were made by res.earcners, from' the .
Water.and \'!ower Resources Service and a consortium of western'Statesl-and
grant coll~ges to achieve a higfi degree of analytical reliability. The
results of': th,ese analyses' are intended to enable Water .and Power .andother
planners to better account for the impacts of salinityin.the.future
pl~nning of mitigation as well as development projects for the Colorado
River. .

11.
