00250'7

2. Social and Economic Effects

b. Industry (page 40)

The following updates and supplements paragraph two:

The current economic situation on the White River National
Forest is such that a forest products industry is no
longer available to utilize all of the timber resource.
The Study Goals on page 17 of the DEIS indicate the local
economic importance of Kaibab Industry's lumber mill
located at Eagle, Colorado. Because of short- and
long-term economics, Kaibab's mill was permanently
closed in June 1980, and the property and equipment
subsequently sold.

The other major lumber mill in the vicinity burned
down shortly after the mill at Eagle closed. The mill
. which burned, Arbaney Timber Company of Glenwood Springs,
a subsidiary of Mid-Continent Coal Company, was within
a relatively short truck haul distanc.e of Spruce Creek.
They plan to rebuild a small mill to manufacture mine
timbers for their coal mines.

The current industry on the White River is made up of
a numQer of small operators. who will be deriving their
raw material needs from small timber sales in areas
where access is readily available.

.e. Values Foregone (add to page 41)

.
