Giles
Acting Director, Midwest Region
National Park Service
U. S. Department of the Interior
1709 Jackson Street
Omaha, Nebraska 68102

Dear Mr. Giles:

Secretary George Romney has asked me to respond to your recent letter
regarding the wilderness proposal for the Black Canyon of the Gunnison
National Monument and Curecanti National Recreation Area, both near
Montrose, Colorado.

I

As our nationt s population continues to grow and as more of our people
live in dense urban areas, it is important that a variety of recreation
areas be maintained and located so that people will have the opportunity
to enjoy a broad range of recreation experiences. We also believe that
as our nation continues to experience environmental problems that it is
important to preserve some areas, such as that described in this
proposal, in a natural state. These areas allow people to achieve
solitude and change from much of the hectic, modern environment.
In addition, such areas can help advance the science of ecology and
maintain a balance of different trOf environment in the nation.

~ S' c~relA

. ht F.
