000256

17

other campground facilities are planned for these areas. These
campgrounds and the improved trails leading to them are excluded
from the proposed wilderness.

The Reclamation Withdrawal Rights of 1 905, which include areas
within the existing monument, have not been revoked. Since areas
of the monument are proposed for wilderness designation, it will
be mandatory to first free such areas from any potential intrusion
which could compromise its unaltered wilderness character. The
National Park Service has requested that the withdrawal be
revoked. All monument lands presently subject to this withdrawal,
whether proposed for wi Iderness status or not, are included in the
request for revocation. Actually, this preliminary wilderness
proposal is predicated on such action.

Wilderness Boundary Description
Beginning 1/8 mile from the northwest corner of the monument,
in sec. 8, T. 50 N., R. 8 W., the wilderness line runs east 1/8 mile
from and parallel to the monument boundary for about 5 miles, to
the vicinity of Grizzly Gulch in sec. 24. From there, it follows the
North Canyon Rim for approximately 7 miles to the southeast area
of the monument, in sec. 10, T. 49 N., R. 7 W.

Crossing the canyon in a westerly direction on the quarter section
line of sec. 10, the wilderness line intercepts and proceeds along
the South Rim in a northwesterly direction for about 3 miles, to
Gunnison Point in sec. 32, T. 50 N., R. 7 W. A 1/16-mile corridor
extending from this point to the Gunnison River runs down the
open ridge in the WY,NW% of sec. 32 to a 10-acre enclave in the
SW%NE%NW% of sec. 32 along the river.

i

The wilderness line continues on the South Rim about 6 miles to
Warner Point. It then proceeds 1/8 mile from and parallel to the
monument boundary for about 2Y, miles, to the bottom of the
east slope of Red Rock Canyon.

It continues northward along the bottom slope to the river, where
it meets a 10-acre enclave on the river banks at BM5471 in the
SE% of sec. 17, T. 50 N., R. 8 W. It returns to the South Rim
along the bottom of the west slope of Red Rock Canyon, and
continues 1/8 mile from and parallel to the monument boundary,
about 3Y, miles to the point of beginning.
