<br />Job hazard analysis: A study of ajob or activity to identify hazards or potential
<br />accidents associated with each step or task, and develop solutions that will eliminate,
<br />nullify, or prevent such hazards or accidents.

<br />Joint, contraction: Contraction joints are placed in concrete to provide for volumetric
<br />shrinkage of a monolithic unit or movement between monolithic units.

<br />Joint, construction: Construction joints are purposely placed in concrete to facilitate
<br />construction; to reduce initial shrinkage stresses and cracks; to allow time for the
<br />installation of embedded metalwork; or to allow for the subsequent placing of other
<br />concrete.

<br />Joint, expansion: A separation between adjoining parts of a concrete structure which is
<br />provided to allow small relative movements, such as those caused by temperature
<br />changes, to occur independently.

<br />Lateral: A channel that conveys water from a canal to a farm, municipality, etc.

<br />Lift line: Horizontal construction joint created when new concrete is placed on
<br />previously placed concrete.

<br />Lining: Any protective material used to line the interior surface of a conduit, pipe, or
<br />tunnel.

<br />Lockout: Clearance procedure in which physical locks replace Safety Tags (see
<br />"clearance").

<br />Log boom: A device used to prevent floating debris from obstructing spillways and
<br />intakes.

<br />observations pertinent to a structure.

<br />Maintenance management system: Any organized system used to ensure that all
<br />preventive maintenance at a facility is accomplished and documented (e.g., 52-card
<br />system, computer system).
<br />
<br />Major facility: A term used by Reclamation to describe those facilities for which an
<br />examination is conducted every third year, alternately conducted by the Denver and
<br />respective regional office. Major facilities include storage dams and reservoirs, diversion
<br />dams with significant storage or where major equipment and operation are complex, large
<br />pumping plants and powerplants, large canal systems, large complex closed conduit
<br />systems, and Group A bridges.
