To provide appropriate protection to selected river reaches and
water-related areas of historic, scientific, and cultural value by designation
of protected rivers.

NORTH D1II<OTA
The State's objective ia to preserve natural, historic, and cultural

resources. The State's review process for water developments provides the

necessary coordination for the preservation of these resources.

SOUTH DAKOTA
South Dakota shall maintain key or unique natural systems on a perpetual

basis. Water resources in a few key places should be managed so as to continue

the existence of indigenous plant and animal communities. Examples of natural

areas and their ecosystems should be left in some areas of the State for the

benefit of future populations.

The policy of the State shall be to recognize that water in lakea for

recreational and esthetic purposes is in the public interest.

A system of wild, scenic, and recreational rivers shall be implemented in

accordance with South Dakota compiled laws 46-l7A-14.

WYOMIN~

Proper consideration must be given to natural, historic, and cultural

resources in all water and related resources planning functions in order to

assure that these features will continue to be available for future

generations. The value of natural, historic, and cultural resources in

relation to current society are acknowledged as a significant contribution to

the standard of living. Inventories are being made for the identification and

classification of this category of resources.

G-34
