.

.

A. INTRODUCTION:

The Uncompahgre River is a tributary to the Gunnison River

which is a tributary to the Colorado River.

The Lower Gunnison

Unit encompasses drainages to both of these rivers. For

administrative purposes the Lower Gunnison Unit has been divided

into four sub-units (see figure 1). Note that Unit 2 has been

further subdivided by the county line.

Publ ic Law 93-320, as amended, requires USDA to monitor on-
farm sal inity control activities and to evaluate program

effectiveness for reducing salt load contributions to the Colorado

River. Additionally, USDA recognizes the importance of evaluating

project impacts on wetlands and other wi Idl ife values and assessing

local economic effects of project implementation. The Lower

Gunnison Monitoring & Evaluation Program has been set up to carry

out the monitoring process in both Delta and Montrose Counties.

B. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

The goal of the hydro-sa I inity monitoring and evaluation

program for the Lower Gunnison Unit of the CRSC program as it is

currently outl ined in the M&E plan is to "Assess the effectiveness

of USDA project actions for reducing the salt load carroed by the
Uncompahgre and Gunnison rivers into the Colorado River."

1

OD0949
