53

1

MODERATOR: 'l'hat'sfine. Go ahead.
MR. STECKEL I This is Representative Waldo's 5tat8-

2

3 ment. "I support the project. I know it will have a strong

4 economic impact on the area. This project has long been

5 needed. Talk of this project started about thirty years ago.

G Twenty years ago the Colorado Water Conservation Board gave

7 the project the highest priority for consideration.

8

The project was authorized for construction in 1964.

9 A repayment contract was signed in 1969. Construction funds

10 have been appropriated by Congress, approved by the President

II and are nOw available to initiate the project construction.

12

I feel the project should be started promptly. I can

13 . see full crops, and a. change of cropping to seed crops, grass

14 seed, alfalfa seed, certified small grain seeds. The environ

15 ment is very suitable to seed production which will net a

16 higher return to the producer, attracting the young people

17 to stay on the farms.

18

The added agricultural dollars will turn in the towns

19 somewhere between three to seven times, sales taxes, income

20 taxes are paid, so not only the area, but the state and the

21

nation, as well, benefit.
W. must remetnberfood is still our basic necessity.

22

23 Ni th the world looking to us for food, I feel we need this

24
project.

25

I will submit written testimony after receiving any
,

.
