The creek heads in the vicinity of Cortez in Montezuma

County, Colorado, runs in a northwest direction and enters Utah thirty-

eight miles below Cortez. McElmo Creek joins the San Juan River in Utah

ten miles downstream from the Utah-Colorado State line.

The watershed of McElmo Creek is at a low elevation with very limited

precipitation. Natural stream runoff is negligible. Present and potential

development of the basin are entirely dependent upon water imported to the

basin from the Dolores River, a tributary of the main Colorado River.

Water Supply

Data on water annually imported to the McElmo Creek Basin from the

Dolores River is given in the following Table XXV.

TABLE XXV

Water Imported Water Imported Water Imported
Year 1000 Acre Feet Year 1000 Acre Feet Year 1000 Acre Feet
1942 103.5 1948 115.9 1954 106.4
1943 119.1 1949 116.5 1955 112.9
1944 113.4 1950 115.3 1956 104.7
1945 117.6 1951 98.4
1946 113.0 1952 117.0 15-yr. 1942-56 Av. 112.2
1947 121. 2 1953 107.9 4-yr. 1953-56 Av. 108.0

Data on McElmo Creek runoff entering Utah as return flow from the

imported water is given in the following Table XXVI.

-37-

;1:,-.,:':k
