The river

heads on the south slope of the San Juan Range in LaPlata County, Colorado.

Watershed peaks rise to elevations over 13,000 feet.

The river runs in a southwest direction and joins the Animas four miles

upstream from the Colorado-New Nexico State line. The Animas joins the San

Juan River twenty-six miles downstream from the State line.

River runoff is uncontrolled except for one small reservoir with a

capacity of 9.1 acre feet. The direct flow of the river is diverted for

the irrigation of land of Florida l"iesa and municipal supply by the City of

Durango. The lands of the Nesa are located at elevations 6,000 to 7,000

feet.

A large area of Florida Mesa is undeveloped due to insufficient water

during the late summer months. The City of Durango has turned to the

Animas River for future municipal water.

Water Runoff

Data on annual historic runoff of the river upstream from water use

is given in the following table XVI:

TABLE XVI

Runoff in Runoff in Runoff in
Year 1000 Acre Feet Year 1000 Acre Feet Year 1000 Acre Feet
1942 105.3 1948 102.4 1954 43.8
1943 61.7 1949 104.1 1955 42.4
1944 87.1 1950 42.6 1956 35.9
1945 67.8 1951 30.1
1946 39.1 1952 98.9 IS-yr. 1942-56 Av. 64.4
1947 66.8 1953 37.3 4-yr. 1953-56 Av. 39.9
-27-
