.

.

l'''
::i", Status of Salinity Control Activities

~ Bureau of Reclamation

Salinity control projects In which both the Bureau of
Reclamation and U.S. Department of Agriculture are involved
and are in the implementation phase are described under this
heading.

Progress during the reporting period on the salinity
projects authorized by Title II of P.L. 93-320 and P.L. 98-
569, and other measures that reduce salinity in the lower
mainstem of the Colorado River, are presented in the
paragraphs that follow. A complete description of the
projects can be found in the "1987 Review - Water Quality
Standards for Salinity - Colorado River System," August 1987.
Location of the proposed salinity control measures are shown
on Figure 2.

. Par adox Valley Uni t (Reclamation) - Although prelimi-
nary testing indicated an acceptable injection zone exists,
concerns emerged regarding the compatibility of the injected
brines and the injection zone formation fluids and the
potential for salt precipitation in the injection zone.
Precipitation could render the well useless. Reclamation,
with the help of a consultant, is investigating the use of
inhibitors and other methods to reduce the potential for
precipitation. A two year test period is scheduled to begin
in early 1990. Approval to begIn injection of brine was
granted by EPA in October 1989.

Grand Valle Unit Reclamation-De artment of A riculture)
- Lin ng 0 the West En Government H gh 1ne Cana was
completed in 1988, removing 5,600 tons per year of salt from
the Colorado River. Construction of the associated laterals
is well under way. About 17 miles of piped laterals were
completed in 1989.

preconstruction activities with the Grand Valley
Irrigation Company, Palisade Irrigation District, and Mesa
County Irrigation District continued in 1989. These
activities included design data collection, negotiations for
operation and maintenance contracts, public involvement, and
rights-of-way.

For the portion of the Grand Valley Salinity Control
Unit being constructed by Reclamation, mitigation of wetland
losses is required.
