COLORADO RIVER RECOVERY PROGRAM
FY 94 ANNUAL PROJECT REPORT

RECOVERY PROGRAM
PROJECT NUMBER: ..li..

I, Project Title: Cooperative Agreement for Conducting Research and
Laboratory Services at Colorado State University, Larval Fish Laboratory-
-Larval Fishes Identification (Sample Processing; Laboratory Services).

II. Principal Investigator(s): Robert T. Muth, Oarrel E, Snyder, Kevin R.
Bestgen; Larval Fish Laboratory, Colorado State University, Fort Collins,
CO B0523; e-mail desnyder@picea.cnr.colostate.edu or
kbestgen@lamar.colostate.edu; phone (303)491-1B48 or 491-5295; fax
491-5091.

III. Project Summary:

A 5-year cooperative agreement was signed in 1990 between the Bureau of
Reclamation and Colorado State University (CST), Larval Fish Laboratory
(LFL); the agreement was extended in summer 1994. Under this agreement,
LfL provides laboratory services where needed; specifically in the areas
of larval-fish identification, dietary studies, laboratory-supported
field-type predator/prey and competition studies, and storage of larval
fishes for all upper basin researchers. The agreement also provides for
di rect fundi ng of any LFL propos a 1 s submi tted to and approved by the
Recovery Program. Work on this project in FY 94 focused on
identification of larval fishes for: 1) the Interagency Standardized
Monitoring Program (ISMP), 2) studies on effects of flows on fishes in
the Colorado and Gunnison rivers, and 3) Aspinall studies,

IV, Study Schedule: 1990-ongoing (until LFL services are no longer needed
by the Recovery Program),

V, Relationship to RIPRAP: LFL provides laboratory services related to a
number of Recovery Program studies. Much of the work is related to the
interagency standardized monitoring program, under the General Recovery
Program Support Act ion Pl an, V. Moni tor populations and habitat and
conduct research to support recovery, Identification of larval fish for
flow effects studies falls under the "Initially identify year-round flows
needed for recovery" items in the Colorado River Action Plan: Mainstem
and the Colorado River Action Plan: Gunnison River.

VI, Accomplishments of FY 94 Tasks and Deliverables, Discussion of Initial
Findings and Shortcomings:

Sample processing, and identification work (laboratory services) under
this agreement relate to the following areas of continued emphasis:
1) Interagency Standardized Monitoring Program (ISMP), 2) studies on
effects of flows on fishes in the Colorado and Gunnison rivers, and
3) Aspinall studies. Goals and objectives of this agreement, as they
relate to sample processing and identification, are being met.

Work performed under the laboratory services portion of the cooperative
agreement in FY 94 with FY 94 funds included sorting, identification,
processing, and storage of: 1) seine samples collected as part of ISMP
by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the state of Utah (fall
1993, Colorado and Green rivers; spring 1994, Colorado River); 2} seine
samples (larvae) collected as part of flow-effects studies by USFWS
