."

.

I

the Alva B. Adams tunnel to the Big Thompson River below Estes Park.
The plant will have one generating unit of 8100 kilowatt capacity and
will operate under a maximum net head of 210 feet.

The Estes power plant will be located on the south bank of the Big
Thompson River about one-half mile below the village of Estes Park. It
will contain three generating units, each consisting of a vertical shaft,
hydraulic turbine operating under a net head of 510 feet, direct-6Gnnected
to a 15,000 kilowatt generator.

The Green Mountain power plant develops nearly 60,000,000 kilowatt-
hours annually. It contains two 10,800 kilovratt generating units of the
vertical hydraulic turbine-driven type, with tiirect-connected generator
with main and pilot exciters. The plant has a varying head, depending
upon the reservoir water surface, bu.t the ave.r~e head is about 225 feet.
The Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company of Newport News, Vir-
ginia, furnished the turbines and the Allis-Chalmers Nanufacturing Com-
pany of Ii.ilwaukee, \1iscor.sin, supplied the tyro generators. All roachinery
and equipment were installed by the Government. The plant went into com-
mercial operation in June 1943.

Construction of power plants between Estes Park and the Foothills
storage reservoirs will be. undertaken when justified by power markets.
Meanwhile, the wat,er will be turned into the Big Thompson River below
the Estes power plant to be carried by that stream to the diversion dam
located in Big Thompson Canyon, about nine miles west of the town of
Loveland and thence carried to the storage reservoirs of the Foothills
storage system.

Transmission Lines

The transmission system vdll consist of several units, one of which
is a 69,000 volt circuit, 51.5 miles in length, connecting the power plant
at Green kountain Dam with the Granby pumping plant and the west portal
of the Alva B. Adams Tunnel. This line, except the pumping plant exten-
sion, has been completed. Five power plants 1vill be connected by 115,000-
volt lines, which .dllcontinue to the market center.

The lines will be wood-pole, H-frame type, with suspension insulators,
A transmission line over Buchanan Pass will be used to conduct power from
the Estes Power Plant to the Granby P~~ping Ylant and western slope power
system.

In order to provide power for construction a permanent 115,OOO-volt
circuit, 27 miles long, has been constructed from Dillon, Colorado (con-
necting with the line of the Public Service Company of Colorado) to Green
Mountain Dam. This line was extended to the west portal of the Alva F.
Adams Tunnel as a 69,000-volt circuit.

Construction has been completed of a temporary 44,oOO-volt circuit
7.5 miles long from the Public Service Company line, one mile south of

7
