CHAPTER l.--SYNOPSIS

The special. report on the irrigation function of the Trinidad

Project has been prepared to firm up the findings of the feasibility

report of 1953 through the study of additional streamflow records

and other data which have become available since that time. The

information presented in this special. report will provide the basis

for reaching necessary operating agreements.

Supplemental. investigations of the proposed Trinidad Project
as conducted by the Bureau of Reclamation represent the study period

1925-1957 and include studies of the water supply available for irri-

gation use, irrigation water requirements, water rights, a plan for

the conservation and utilization of the water supply in meeting the
water requirements of the irrigated area, and an anal.ysis of the

effects of operation of the project for irrigation use on the down-

stream water users. Due aCknowledgement is made to free access and

liberal. use of material. found in the June 1953 Review Report, Appendix

D - Irrigation Report - Trinidad Project.

The Trinidad Project works would consist of the Trinidad Dam

and Reservoir at a site about 4 miles upstream from the city of

Trinidad, Colorado, on the Purgatoire River. The dam would provide

protection from floods for the city of Trinidad, sediment control

and protection to diversion dams, canal. headings, and irrigation

facilities of ditches diverting from the Purgatoire River along

its course from Trinidad to its contuence with the Arkansas River

at Las Animas, Colorado. The dam would provide facilities for
