Carbon dioxide, <br />derived from the atmosphere or from biological processes, readily dissolves in <br />water, which decreases pH and increases acidity. Chemical constituents in <br />soils and rocks are selectively dissolved into the water in various states of <br />oxidation and ionization. The chemical constituents commonly are grouped as <br />major constituents or ions, nutrients, and trace constituents. <br /> <br />23 <br />
