Rocky Mountain offers mountain <br /> <br />granduer and Mesa Verde is famous as the. site of ancient cliff- <br />o <br /> <br />dweller culture. <br /> <br />The U. S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife administers four <br /> <br />national wildlife refuges totaling over 44,000 acres. <br /> <br />The State Division of Game, Fish and Parks has jurisdiction over <br /> <br />161 areas, totaling about 100,000 acres. The Parks program involves <br /> <br />23 properties, located throughout the State. <br /> <br />The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers administers about 98,000 acres <br /> <br />of land for recreational use in the State, most of which is leased to <br /> <br />other agencies for management. <br /> <br />The Shano,", }lountain National Recreation Are3- comprises about <br /> <br />r;p <br />"' <br />C'l <br />o <br /> <br />18,240 acres of land and water and provides facilities for several <br /> <br />types of outdoor activities. <br /> <br />Seven national monuments add to the State's environmental resources. <br /> <br />These include the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, the Colorado National <br /> <br />Monument, the Dinosaur National Monument, the Great Sand Dunes National <br /> <br />Monument, the Hovenweep National Monument, the Yucca House National <br /> <br />Monument and the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. <br /> <br />There are 139 county, 453 city and 37 quasi-public recreation areas <br /> <br />in Colorado. Most feature various types of outdoor activities. <br /> <br />Privately-owned recreational areas number 725, involving 1,500,000 acres. <br /> <br />c. Cultural Environmental Resources <br /> <br />Cultural activities and attractions are numerous and varied, <br /> <br />providing many outlets for entertaimnent and relaxation. Some 400 <br /> <br />special events are staged throughout the State each year. There are <br /> <br />-more than 60 rodeos and 30 fairs, authentic western melodrama and square <br />
