Later in 1985 CGS proceeded to do formal
geologic hazards mapping of the town site and it environs. During that
study it was noted that a second debris flow area posed an even greater
threat. When this was reported to local and State officials we were
asked to proceed to a study of potential mitigation opportunities. This
study was completed in May of 1986 and included a preliminary engineering
design and cost estimates. State and local officials are currently
evaluating the options and exploring for a funding source for possible
construction.

14) In the summer of 1985,
with road damage. This
was field checked and turned out to be an area of numerous debris flows.
Most potential impacts are to county roads but some residences are also
endangered. CGS plans to do general geologic hazards mapping of the
area, probably in 1987-88.

15) Wilson Creek-Devi1's Hole Gulch area, Moffat and Rio 81anco Counties,
debris flows, erosion, landslides. This area includes the very large
Wilson Creek Oil Field and its access roads and a major transmission
line. Large sections of the road and transmission line have been
destroyed by a sequence of debris flows, erosion, and activation of older
landslides. This began in May of 1984, and is continuing to be an
intractable problem. CGS had aerial photographs flown in 1985 and did a
quick photogeo1ogic reconnaissance to assist Moffat County in planning
possible mitigation. Study of the area has interesting scientific as
well as practical implications. Detailed quadrangle-level mapping is a
high priority objective for 1987.

3179

- 9 -
