........... :

- - -. -~-' --' .-- ..... .'- - ----

030666
4)

Marble and vicinit , Gunnison Count. This community is affected by
two arge debris-f ow producing creeks which form a common debris fan.
Detailed geologic hazards mapping with particular emphasis on debris
flows was completed for this community by CGS in 1972. Additional
quadrangle-level geologic hazards mapping covering adjacent areas along
the Crystal River valley was completed in 1978. Marble has been ravaged
by debris flows throughout its history and much of the remaining town is
still vulnerable. Available geologic hazards mapping is adequate for
land-use decisions and planning.

5) Telluride and vicinity. This is a former mining town, undergoing rapid
growth from the nearby ski resort and summer tourism. The older parts of
town occupy the entire fan of Coronet Creek which has produced infrequent
but very large debris-flow events. The two large events of record, 1914
and 1969, affected different parts of the town'but totaled about 70
percent of it. The town, State and Federal agencies are aware of the
problems. Mitigation needs include debris control at the head of the fan
and channel improvements through the west part of town. Efforts to
accomplish needed mitigation will be difficult because of pervasive
existing development and historic preservation constraints.

FUTURE PLANS. CGS expected to have new aerial photography flown for
the Coronet Creek basin and the valley lands west of town along the San
Miguel River in 1986 with geologic hazard mapping following in 1986-87.
However, no funding was available.

6) Idaho Springs and other towns in Clear Creek corridor, Clear Creek
County. The numerous communities that are bUllt on debris fans 1n this
area are vulnerable. Although there have been no serious events in the
past few decades both historic and geologic data confirm the potential
for damaging debris flows. CGS has mapped geologic hazards for the
community of Idaho Springs. Also, preliminary research on fan
stratigraphy and radiocarbon (C14) dating has been done at several
locations. Another topic for applied research in this target area is the
investigation of some large Holocene rockfall deposits that have blocked
the valley in the past. Study of these could lead to better
understanding and evaluation of modern potential for catastrophic
valley-blocking landslides.

FUTURE PLANS. This is a very large target area and specific projects
will have to be isolated and prioritized. This should be done in
1986-87, and one or two high priority projects should be started.

7) Dutch Creek area west of Redstone. On several occasions debris flows
have been reported to have destroyed surface facilities at the mines in
the upper basin, and debris plugs have been reported at the mouth of the
main stream near Redstone.

FUTURE PLANS. CGS should do a photogeologic reconnaissance of this
basin using existing aerial photographs. Subsequently, if special needs
emerge in the preliminary study, additional detailed work should be
scheduled.

8)

These areas are located on the
produce
Debris

- 7
