Post-slide photogeologic mapping, core drilling, and
installatlon of a permanent EDM movement monitoring array have been
completed. The EDM arrays are currently operational and are being
monitored. Core logging of 12 boreholes, and installation of six
inclinometers was completed in late fall of 1986. These instruments are
read periodically by the CDOH. A series of 121 photogrammetrically
generated profiles showing pre- and post-slide configurations have been
completed and are available in atlas form from CGS.

WORK IN PROGRESS. Work on a detailed geotechnical report is underway.
Drill hole and topographic data are being used to produce geologic cross
sections of the slide complex. ' Laboratory testing of slide materials is
underway at the USGS lab under contract from CGS. EDM stations and
inclinometers are continuing to be monitored by CGS and CDOH personnel.

FUTURE PLANS. Data will be periodically collected from EDM stations
and lncllnometers. The possibility of installing real-time monitoring
instruments hooked up via satellite to existing DNR satellite telemetry
facilities in Denver is being considered by CDOH and CGS, if additional
funding for hardware can be found.

SOURCES OF FUNDING: SGF, SEF, USGS, CDOH, USBR, FHA.

3) Green Mountain Reservoir slides, Summit County. No action taken on
these slides to date. Intentions were to make a detailed field
reconnaissance during summer or fall of 1986. However, no funding was
available.

4)

landslides, vicinit of Marble Gunnison Count.
these slides in recent years. Recommendation is
field inspection during 1986-87.

5) Wolcott Slide, Eagle County. This large earthflOll/slide complex
contlnues to impact Interstate 70. The Colorado Department of Highways
carried out studies with assistance from the Colorado School af ~ines in
1985. Continuing studies are under way by the Colorado Department of
Highways.

No action
to make

6) Junction Rock Slide on Clear Creek, Gilpin and Clear Creek Counties.
This slide was monitored by USGS staff in the 1960's. We should
reinitiate monitoring either in-house or as a Co-op study with USGS,
prObably with extensometers and EDM stations.

7) Slum ullion Earthflow, Hinsdale Count. This is a giant earthflow of
particu ar interest because movement has reactivated in the upper Olle
half. The mechanism(s) for reactivation of very large old slides is a
high priority applied-research objective with the CGS. Movement of the
active upper section has been monitored intermittently for the past
thirty years by USGS personnel. This work is currently being intensified
by Bob Schuster, Dave Varnes and Rich Madole. New aerial photography was
done by CGS in 1985 through SEF funding to assist USGS in field Qapping
and monitoring.

., 3
,~ - -
~
