....
CD
N
CJl

As the Nation's principal conservation agency, the Department of
the Interior has basic responsibilities for water, fish, wildlife,
mineral, land, park and recreatiop.al resources. Indian Territorial
affairs are other major concerns of America's "Department of
Natural Resources".

.

"'

.

The Department works to assure the wisest choice in managing all
our resources so each will make its full contribution to a better
United States- -now and in the future.

FOREWORD

This is one of a continuing series of reports designed to present
accounts of progress in saline water conversion and the economics
of its application. Such data are expected to contribute to the long-
range development of economical processes applicable to low-cost
demineralization of sea and other saline water.

Except for minor editing, the data herein are as contained in the
report submitted by the contractor. This report reflects an updating
of an earlier (1968) report under the same contract to include cost
analysis of an additional modification of the distillation process, the
vapor compression process, ang. updating of the costs for the multi-
stage flash distillation process, and adding the combination vertical
tube evaporator/multi-stage flash distillation process. Costs for the
membrane processes, reverse osmosis and electrodialysis, are
identical to those contained in the earlier report. Because of the
rapidly changing technology in desalting process development, especially
in the field of membrane processes development, these costs are sub-
ject to rapid change and improvement. In consideration of the growing
interests in the economics of alternative desalting processes, we are
publishing these results pending further updating.

ii
