<br />Cultural Resources <br /> <br />~ <br />~ <br /> <br /> <br />Foelda'Cn&OlOl1';wo,.alDoiO'<>sPrO,ee1 <br /> <br />The Upper Colorado Region's cultural <br />resources program is designed to provide <br />planning and construction functions with <br />the necessary Cultural resources data to <br />minimize the impact of Reclamation pro. <br />grams on archeological and hIstorical <br />resources. In-house and contract surveys <br />are conducted 10 locale, test, and evalu- <br />ate the resource base, and if necessary <br />through contract. data recovery IS under- <br />laken to mitigate major project impacts. <br /> <br />Survey and Evaluation <br /> <br />The lOcating and evaluation 01 the data <br />base to be effected is critical 10 properly <br />integrating cullural resources Into the <br />overall goals at the Bureau of Reclama. <br />lion. To facilitate these efforts. the regIon <br />has arCheologists located in the Grand <br />Junction. Durango. and Provo Project <br />Offices. and the Cortez Construc\!on <br />OffIce. These archeologists provide an in- <br />house capability to conduct tImely and <br />cosl-effective cullura! resources work as <br />needed. The region is also diVided into <br />three areas under Basic Ordering Agree. <br />ments to cover lhose surveys whIch are <br />too large or too Ilme-consuming to be <br />done with Reclamation resources. The <br />areas are the West Slope ot Colorado. the <br /> <br />,- -'!'J r- <br /> <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />'- <br />0''' -..;.,.. #~ <br />;~..... - <br /> <br />,. h'!' <br /> <br />,).. "'. <br /> <br />,,,.p, <br /> <br />Four Corners. and Central Utah PrOjects <br />Area. During 1981, Reclamation con. <br />ducted 48 cultural resources surveys <br />throughout the region. <br /> <br />Mitigation <br /> <br />When required by the presence 01 signifi. <br />cant resources in a prOject area. <br />Reclamation undertakes Data Recovery <br />Programs. In 1981, Reclamation con. <br />cluded a 3-year program at the Dallas <br />Creek ProJect. Ongoing. Since 1978. is the <br />DoJores Archeological Program (DAP). The <br />DAP IS an extensive data recovery pro- <br />gram which by the end 01 1983. will have <br />excavated over 200 sites Within the <br />prOject boundaries. In Conjunction with <br />DAP. Reclamation IS pJannlng. and Will <br />constrUCI the Anasazl Herttage Center to <br />display to the public the arllfacts reo <br />covered dUTlng the Dolores ArCheOlogical <br />Program. <br /> <br />19 <br />
