DOLORES PROJECT

Summary Analysis

The Dolores Project, autJ'lorized by Public Law 90-537 on September 30,

1968, is a multipurpose project located in southwestern Colorado in

Dolores and Montezuma Counties, This project would serve 26,300 acres

of supplemental service lands, 27,860 acres of non-Indian full service

lands, and 7,500 acreS of full service land on the Ute Mountain Ute

Indian Reservation.

~!unicipal water supplies would be made available for the towns of

Cortez, Dove Creek, and Towaoc (located on the Ute Mountain Ute Indian

Reservation) and for the rural areas of Dolores County.

The restoration of the historically dry but scenic Dolores River

Canyon below the project would be possible by providing storage releases

of water to guarantee minimum streamflows below McPhee Reservoir. These

flows would not only enhance the canyon but would reestablish a good trout

fishery for several miles below the dam and a warm water fishery through-

out the canyon area.

I. Economic Analysis
A. Benefit-Cost Ratio

Project construction costs of $187,336,000 and annual OM&R costs

of $936,000 have been allocated to irrigation, municipal and

1
