:.)i.h~

fishermen. Colorado Division of Wildlife recommendations for the
protection and management of this species will be accommodated to the
maximum possible extent.

.

D. And on page 35, it says, "During. . . peak runoff, the natural
stream provides a flushing action on the gravel spawning beds. With-
out this flushing action silt accumulstions may occur, causing fish
eggs to die of suffocation." '

Response;

This is true. However, several positive aspects come about when the
streamflows are low. The resulting increased temperature accelerates
the metabolism in aquatic insects and fish giving ria. to . faster
growth rste. During most years flows during spring runoff will be
sufficient to cause scouring of the gravel and flush the spawning
beds.

E. The other endangered species in the area which will undou~tedly
become extinct are the Canadian lynx, the bald eagle, and the falcon.,

Response:

There have been, as indicated in Chapter III, Section A9, only occasional
sightings of the Csnada lynx and the American peregrine falcon. The
environmental statement has been modified to reflect the presence of
theae animals as threatened species; however, the Northern bald eagle
is not considered a threatened species. The Bureau will cooperate
with the Colorado Division of Wildlife and the Foreat Service to
protect and preserve any of these species and their habitat that occurs
throughout the Project. The Project will cause no loas of habitat
critical to the continued eX18cence or Lh~ti~ ~p~Ci5D.

.

3. Issue: The Bureau can provide underpasses and overpasses for
game to cross the canals, but it appears the Bureau ia not doing so.

Raised by:

~

Representing

Joseph Edwards
*Tam Scott
*Stacy Standley

Pitkin County Commissioners
Colorado Rivers Council
Mayor of Aspen

.

XI-439
