ESTIMATED ANNUAL GROWTH RATES
BY COUNTY, DENVER SMSA
1970-1972
1970
"
4,7%
3.1
5.2
0,9
6.4
3.3%
\

years. In 1970 it was calculated at 3.3%. In 1971
" it was 4.4%. In 1972 it gained to 5.3%.
The DRCOG study points out the growing im-
portance of inmigration to this region. During
1970, it was estimated at about 65% or 26,000
inmigrants. By 1972, net inmigration accounted
for 83% of the population increase or 59,100.
Relatively favorable economic performance, the
area's physical attractiveness, the climate, the prox-
imity to recreational areas and generally depressed
'economic conditions on coastal cities, all account
for the large numbers of migrants to the area. A
decline in farming-related and other small town
job opportunities are additional factors.
The study noted that more than two-thirds of
,the migrants to this region originated from outside
of Colorado.
The plains, mountain and southwestern states,
including Colorado, accounted for about 53% of
incoming families, Northeastern coastal states and
west coast states accounted for 25% of the mi-
grants, 14% from the west coast and 11 % from the
east coast.

,,;......J ..........r

~.

County
Adams
Arapahoe
Boulder
Denver
Jefferson
SMSA

\.

~
,

>:

I

~.
.

(
1

I.
f

1971
5.9%
7,3
6.2
1.0
7.6
4.4%

ORIGIN OF MIGRANTS
TO SMSA
1969 -1971

Origin

Colorado, outside of SMSA
Mountain, Plains & Southwest States
Midwest States
Pacific States
Middle Atlantic States
Southern States
New England States
TOTAL

1972
5.1%
9.5
7.6
0.8
10.5
5.3%

Percent
Of Total

24.4%
28,0
15,1
14,1
8,5
7.2
2.7
100.0%

The two most attractive counties to the new-
comers were Jefferson and Arapahoe Counties.
Jefferson attracted '42.8% of the new residents
during 1972 and Arapahoe's share was 25.9%.
Many new large residential developments are tak-
ing place particularly in northeastern and eastern
Jefferson County and parts of Arapahoe County
immediately south and southeast of Denver.
Although net inmigration is the major portion
of the population increase, the other factor con-
tributing to the gain was natural increase, or the
balance between births and deaths.

COMPONENTS OF ESTIMATED RESIDENT
POPULATION CHANGE, DENVER SMSA
January 1, 1912 - January 1, 1973

Nei
Inmigration

County
Adams
Arapahoe
Boulder
Denver
Jefferson
SMSA

Death.
932
975
831
5,240
1,485
9,463

Total
Change
10,400
17,000
11,100
4,300
27,800
10,600

Birtha
3,519
2,650
2.144
8,646
3,960
.20,919

7,813
15,325
9,787
894
25,325
59,144

Natural increase has been playing a declining
role in, population gains in recent years.
