""tl/ <br />COUNCIL SELECTS' DIRECTOR "'ION BOARD <br /> <br />WESTERN STATES, WATER <br /> <br />Mr. Wright Hiatt, San Francisco, will be the first executive director <br /> <br />of the Western States Water Council. The appointment, announced today by Freeman <br /> <br />Holmer, chairman of the Council, is effective February 1. The headquarters of <br /> <br />the Council is in Portland, Oregon. The offices will be located at the Portland <br /> <br />International Airport, <br /> <br />Mr. Hiatt, 51, is a retired officer of the Corps of Engineers, U. S. <br /> <br />Army, who spent much of his active service in water resources development work. <br /> <br />Early in his career he served at the U.S. Waterways Experiment Station, Vicks- <br /> <br />burg, Mississippi; and later served as Deputy Chief of Civil Works in the Office <br /> <br />-" <br />j <br /> <br />Chief of Engineers in Washington, D.C. He is a registered professional engineer <br /> <br />in California, New York and the District of Columbia; a graduate of Army War College <br /> <br />and West Point. He obtained his M.S. degree in civil engineering from the Univer- <br /> <br />sity of Illinois. Since retirement from active service, he has worked with con- <br /> <br />su1ting engineering firms in New York and San Francisco. He is married and has <br /> <br />two chi ldren. <br /> <br />The Western States Water Council was created by the Western Governors' <br /> <br />Conference in June, 1965, to accomplish effective cooperation among western states <br /> <br />in planning for programs leading to integrated development by state, federal and <br /> <br />other agencies of their water resources. Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, <br /> <br />Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming are members of <br /> <br />the Council, with the Governors serving as ex-officio members. Three representa- <br /> <br />tives from each state comprise the Council, one of whom is designated as a member <br /> <br />of the Executive Committee. <br />
