Collection of Saline Return Flows

.

Several problems exist in this approach.
collecting sufficient amounts of saline return
salinity reductions equivalent to improvements
prohibitive. If the water could be collected,
water rights in removing water from the system

For example, the cost of
flows that would result in
in the canal system would be
then the problem of the
becomes an issue.

Desalting plants

The technology associated with desalting plants has not progressed to
the state where this is a viable alternative from a cost effectiveness
standpoint.

Evaporation Ponds

The water consumed by evaporation ponds could be charged to Utah's
allocation of Colorado River water. This appears to be unacceptable to the
State.

Deep Well Injection

This alternative would not be cost effective because of difficulty in
finding water tight formations.

Retirement of High Salt Contributing Lands

This alternative would require that the water supply associated with
these lands not be used for further irrigation. The water users in the
area, because of shortages of water in midseason, would consider retire-
ment of saline land, but would not consider reduction of any water rights.

No Action

With this alternative the goal of maintaining the salinity level at
Imperial Dam at 879 mg/L would not be achieved. This could also mean
that water developments in t~e Upper Basin would be restricted. As with
all studies done by the Bureau of Reclamation, the decision to take no
action can be made if a feasible plan cannot be identified.

Candidate Plans

The alternative which was the most well received and economically
sound was canal lining, it was from this alternative that the concept of:
(1) concrete lining of canals, (2) combination of earth and concrete
lining, and (3) a pipeline system were developed.

OuC46J

14
