The
location of return flows in relation to Pueblo Reservoir is
the main factor in the water quality equation. The
references used to assign these salinity levels are: (1)
"Quality of the Arkansas River and Irrigation Return Flows
in the Lower Arkansas River Valley, Colorado" (Water
Resource Investigation Report 84-4273) by U. S. Geological
survey; and (2) "Relations of Specific Conductance to
Streamflow and Selected Water Quality Characteristics of the
Arkansas River Basin, Colorado" (Water Resource
Investigation Report 87-040-41) by U. S. Geological Survey.

The salinity levels, as determined above, were simply
related to volumes of return flow and groundwater recharge
to obtain tons of salt.

crop consumptive use, surface return flows, and groundwater
recharge are computed in the spreadsheet. Figure 3 is a
graphic illustration of the water budget accounting. Table
3 is a sample of the spreadsheet for a selected canal
system. A glossary of terms is also included for
clarification of terms used in the water budget.

It should be noted that a provision is made in the
spreadsheet for intercept water. This item of input data is
significant only for those canals previously listed in
groups. Canal system spreadsheets within each group are
linked together so that a portion of return flows from one
canal may be a water supply to an adjacent system. This
feature has a significant impact on crop consumptive use and
return flows to the river.
