00
N
N

PROJECT LANDS

General Description
Project lands are north of the Colorado River between the towns of

New Castle and Rifle, Colorado. Three areas of relatively compact
irrigated farm land requiring supplemental water with scattered tracts
of new arable land will be served by the project. Land,i under the
~
Harvey Gap Reservoir &Pe called Harvey Mesa lan~. The lanQ.l!l above
the reservoir in Elk Creek Valley ~ called Elk Creek lands and the
lands of Rifle Creek Valley under the Dav~ Ditch aPe called Dav~

Ditch lanq,s'.

Land Classification

Project lands and lands of adjacent areas were mapped and classified

by the Bureau of Reclamation in 1936 as a part df the general land

study of the Cplorado River Basin. Irrigated and arable lanqs as
studied w&Pe defined as follows:

Irri~ated Land is all land regardless of quality which has been

irrigated even though the supply of water ma,y have been inadequate for

a large part of the time. Irrigated meadow or pasture land was so

designated in contrast to other irrigated land.

Arable Land is all undeveloped land under existing irrigation

systems or possible extensions of such systems capable of development

with irrigation as determined from inherent quality and physical

conditions which would affect cultivation. The classification study

dealt with the facts of a physical nature, no attempt being made to

evaluate the economic features of development.

'-
