The dam site is located in

section 7, Township 5 South, Range 92 West, Sixth Principal Meridian.

The confluence of East, Middle and West Rifle Creeks forms the reservoir

basin and the crossing of Rifle Creek over the hard resistant rock of

the Grand Hogback forms the dam site. On each side of Rifle Creek the

Hogback rises abruptly several hundred feet making possible a dam of

much greater height than is required for the storage of project water.

'j

The dam axis is 7 miles north of the town of Rifle, location of the

nearest railroad shipping point, and is reached by 3! miles of State

Highway and 3i miles of state improved gravel road.

I

SurveyS and Dam Exploration
The reservoir basin and dam site were mapped by forces of the

Bureau of Recllimation in 1939 on a scale of 1 inch equals 1,000 feet

with contour interval of 10 feet for the basin, and 1 inch equals

50 feet with contour interval of 5 feet for the dam site. Foundation

"

conditions at the dam site were explored b~' diamond drilling and a

number of test pits.

Geology
The reservoir basin is a wide section of Rifle Creek Valley where

,

the non-resistant shale and sandstone is eroded to form the junction of
.

West, Middle and East Rifle Creeks. The tight, compact shale leaves

little question of the possibility of reservoir bedrock seepage although

, '

.
