l!?
M
C\J

REPAYMENT ABRITY

Present and Anticipated Land Utilization
Lands of the project area are 86% developed for irrigation.

Crops common to a semi-arid, temperate climate are grown successfully

in the area with irrigation. Precipitation is insufficient for success-

ful farming without irrigation. The lands with a better supply of

irrigation water are used for the growing of crops of higher potential

income returns such as the common varieties of fruit, potatoes, onions

and sugar beets. Canning crops can be erown successfully although

packing facilities are not now available within reasonable transportation

limits. Lands with lesser water supply are us,ed largely for the pro-

duction of small grain and forage crops. The additional water supply

to be made available by the project will provide for the growing of a

larger acreage of the higher i-ncome crops and the yield of all crops

will be increased.

Crop census of project irrigated land was taken by the Bureau of

Reclamation in 1937. From the data collected and from similar information

on crops grown, crop yields and crop prices of the lands of the Uncompahgre

and the Grand Valley Projects on which an adequate irrigation supply

of water is available taking into account differences in altitude,

soils and marketing conditions, the following table has been prepared

showing the present and anticipated crop income of the project land.

The table reflects average long time prices and yields and not those

of spy year or short period of years. The present crop program as

shown L'1 the table is in close agreement with similar data given in the

state Water Commissioner reports. Yields and prices check reasonably

close with similar data reported in Agriculture Census summaries for

Garfield County of Colorado.

'-
