<br />CHAPTER I <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />some direct flow diversions. Irrigation replacement flows for the <br />owners of the Grand Mesa reservoirs and owners of direct flow <br />diversion rights are released from Vega Reservoir through the <br />Southside Canal. <br /> <br />Existinq proiect Outouts <br /> <br />Irrigation <br /> <br />Vega Dam and Souths ide Canal provide water for the irrigation of <br />22,210 acres of full and supplemental service project lands. <br />Principal crops are alfalfa, hay, small grains, and pasture. These <br />crops are used primarily to support beef cattle and sheep <br />production. <br /> <br />Hydroelectric Power <br /> <br />Two hydroelectric powerplants (Upper and Lower Molina) are in <br />operation, with a combined installed capacity of 13,500 kilowatts. <br />An average of 15,100 acre-feet of water is diverted into the <br />Bonham-Cottonwood collection system and through the penstock to <br />produce an average of 54,000,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electrical <br />-----~~ _._~-------~--------------_.- ._-----~----- - <br />---energy-per year. <br /> <br />Recreation and Fish and wildlife <br /> <br />Construction and operation of the Grand Mesa reservoirs have <br />improved lake fisheries. Some damage. to stream fisheries and <br />wildlife. values resulted from the reduction of flows downstream <br />from storage or diversion structures and from inundation of stream <br />habitat in the Vega Reservoir area.
