<br />1. , <br />:.' ~'" <br /> <br />~').~:-, <br />1"',:'1-~,"- <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />I'isheries <br /> <br />The ~ain strea~s are the Elk River and its headwater tributaries, Big <br />Creek, ~!ad Creek, Sor!a Creek, Fish Creek, Harrison Creek, Service Creek, <br />and the upper portion of ~lorrison Creek. These Naters provide habitat <br />for rainbow 'trout, white fish, brown trout, brook trout, cutthroat and <br />trash fish. There are numerous smaller side streams and tributaries <br />>Ihich maintain high populations of small brook trout >Ii th some rainbow <br />and cutthroat. - <br /> <br />The 2~ high elevation lakes and three reservoirs Maintain a brook, <br />rainhow, and cutthroat population. Hany beaver ponds on small streams <br />maintain a population of brook trout. Natural lakes occupy ~6~ acres. <br />The reservoirs occupy l5~ acres. <br /> <br />Nearly all streams and lakes are evaluated as high quali ty \~aters. ~Iost <br />provide very clear cool water, excellent pool-riffle ratio, clarity, <br />good fish food supply, good condition fish, good legal access, and high <br />esthetic values. <br /> <br />Threatened, Endangered Or Unique Species <br /> <br />No Threatened or endangered species are known to exist. The pralrle <br />falcon, American osprey, golden eagle, and bald eagle utilize the area <br />and are transitory species with the bald eagle being the only non- <br />nester. So~e observations have been reported for grey fox, Canada Lynx, <br />and wolverine but these have not been verified. <br /> <br />The list of threatencd and endangered plants founn in COlorado and <br />Wyoming has identified no endangered plants occurring on the Unit. <br /> <br />The upper Elk River drainage and northern Park P.ange has been identified <br />as an area containing uncommon plants normally not found in the southern <br />Rocky Mountain area but common to the Pacific Northwest and the northern <br />Rockies. tlany of these plants have been identified, however, none are <br />on the Federal threatened or endangered plant list. <br /> <br />Historic and Archaeological <br /> <br />There are no sites listed in the current National P.egister of Historic <br />Places. Two sites having state and local significance are Rabbit Ears <br />Pass and the log flumes on Service Creek, The latter will be studied to <br />determine their significance to be nominated for the Register. <br /> <br />Wilderness - Roadless <br /> <br />Wi thin the Unit are 29,310 acres of the tlt. Zirkel Wilderness. An <br />additional 71,900 acres of the 'iad Creek Inventoried Roadless Area (DB <br />and DB-I) and contiguous .'oadless areas has been designated as a New <br />Wilderness Study Area. <br /> <br />5 <br />
