Some outlyinr, subdivisions <br />such as the Elk Ridge Estates on the Elk P.iver are still very viable. <br />These arc generally subdivisions based Oll larger tracts of five to 40 <br />acres and which are associated with hirh quality scenic or recreation <br />opportunities. <br /> <br />Special Uses <br /> <br />About 6S special use permits are in effect in the area. These range <br />from permits covering very substantial improvements such as Steamboat <br />Ski Area with investments in the millions' of dollars, reservoirs, summer <br />homes and high VOltage power transmission lines to small irrigation <br />ditches, spring developments and permits for packers to set up temporary <br />camps. Ilost of the special use permits are in the Steamboat Springs- <br />Rabbit Ears Pass area. Many of the special uses such as Steamboat Ski <br />Area have substantial primary and secondary impacts. <br /> <br />Several special use applications for major activities are pending. <br />These include demand for additional reservoirs, power generation, <br />transcontinental water diversion projects and ski areas. <br /> <br />The special use permits occuPy 1,3~4 acres of National Forest land and <br />return $40,150 to the government annually in fees. Some permits have no <br />impact on other uses. <br /> <br />9 <br />
