18 HISTORY OF CONSERVATION IN THE MISSOURI VALLEY

. '. .

.: ;~

rich valleys in Montana but are very much used at this date
by man. Elk do not seem to like the dense timber and rocks like
the smaller deer. The elk shows uneasiness at mysterious move-
ment and a major migration might be attempted at any time,

The common deer, as typical of the different deer varieties,
is perhaps Mother Nature's masterpieces of grace, utility and
beauty, Nowhere do we find the coloring to compare with the
four beautiful changes each season. These coats also have the
utility value of camouflage, besides being cool or warm as the
season dictates, By nature they shed the antlers, The fawns come
in late spring, The little fawn, like the young of most grazing
animals, is almost oderless and has his own fancy camouflage
coat. This youngster is as self-reliant after a few days as a human
is at twelve years.

The enemy of all the deer family, of the bison and wild ','
horse are the flesh-eating animals who keep the herds in balance.
V,Te can think of these flesh-eating animals as protectors against
over-grazing of the grass, These flesh-eating animals are the
natural balance, but stern nature has another emergency bal-
ance to protect her precious grass lands. Scattered over the area,
buried deep in the soil, where it will live for half a century is
the anthrax germ, Peradventure a condition arises when weak
hungry grazing animals eat the grass roots and soil, during the
dry, hot autumn, they will find the germ at the surface. The
germ is at first weak, and if the grazing animal is strong no harm
will come. However if conditions are as above described a ter-
rible anthrax epidemic will develop, and run until frost when
the germ again goes underground and waits patiently for years
until the punishment is again deserved.

Let us analyze the wolf family to note what keeps them
from becoming so strong in numbers as to overbalance the wild
life of the prehistoric area. The wolf proper mates for life and
the pair are usually found alone in a twenty-five mile radius
circle. If and when they go in packs they are very quarrelsome.
