From drawing
331-0-13.

The gross drainage area of 1,495 square miles behind Bonny Dam is about
6 percent of the total Republ1can River watershed. Yet, Bonny reservoir has 12.8
percent of the total flood control capacity of the 14 Republican River basin reservoirs
planned or under construction. Bonny Dam, in conjunction with the other proposed or
potential dams in the basin, will control any Republican River flood as great as has
ever been recorded In the past. Comparable flocx:l control will be extended to the
mouth of the Kansas River at Kansas City upon completion of the potential or proposed
dams.

lB. Earth Dam. - The scarcity of free-draining materials In the vicinity of the
dam site Iimlled the zoning POSSibilities to an essentially homogeneous structure. A
dam with a height of 158 feet above the excavation in the cutoff trench was selected.
The crest ....idth is 30 feet and the crest length 9,200 feet. The total embankment,
including riprap, gravel blanket, zones I, 2, and 3, and topsoil for seeding, approxi-
mates 9,000,000 cubic yards.

,

The large reservoir formed by the relatively 10.... head at normal ....'ater sur-
face elevation will not require rapid drawdowns to meet the irrigation demands. Al-
though the dam is comparatively high and will provide storage for flO<Xl control, the
reservoir waters will seldom reach the higher levels of the upstream slopes above
the normal water surface. The upstream slopes as adopted will provide a stable
structure under such operahng conditions.

-

-

-

-

~.

-

---

- -

-
