IV

FOREWORD

Intrinsically, words have no meanings. They are arbitrary symbols
used to stimulate the mind to conjure up concepts previously associated
with the word. A good definition can be defined as a worded symbolic
statement designed to create in the mind of the receiver the same concept
envisioned by the originator. If the definitions used in this glossary
fulfill that requirement, the writers will feel that their work has not
been in vain.

In this glossary, terms are defined in the form normally employed
in a spoken or written report. A selected few are cross referenced under
the noun word form, thus:

FIRM YIELD--(Defined)
YIELD, FIRM--See FIRM YIELD.

The Water Management Technical Subcommittee desires that this glossary
be responsive to the needs of its users. Therefore, it is desirable that
revisions be published if warranted. To take advantage of this provision,
users are invited to submit criticisms 'of words or definitions contained
herein, or suggest new terms and definitions which should have been included
to:

Chairman, Water Management Technical
SubcOllllDi ttee, PSIAC
Care Of:
Regional Coordinator
Bacific Southwest Region
U.S. Department Of the Interior
P.
