001372

GLOSSARY OF WATER MANAGEMENT TERMS

INACTIVE STORAGE CAPACITY--That capacity, less than which the reservoir
is not n01'lMlly intended to be drawn, and which is provided for
sedimentation, recreation, fish and wildlife, for purely aesthetic
reasons, or for creation of a minimum controlled operational or power
head.

INDIRECT FLOOD DAMAGE--Flood damages other than direct flood damage to
property, structures, crops, etc., such as loss of business, costs of
emergency measures, etc., and subject to monetary evaluation.

INDUCED COSTS--All uncompensated adverse effects caused by the construc-
tion and operation of a program or project, whether tangible or
intangible.

INDUCED RECHARGEnSee ARTIFICIAL RECHARGE.

INFERRED NATURAL FLOW--A calculated value of that rate of flow of water
which would have flowed past a specified point on a stream :tf its up-
stream drainage area had not experienced effects caused by stream
diversion, storage, import, export, return flow, or change :tn con-
sumptive use caused by man-controlled modifications to land use.
(Sometimes called full natural flow or unimpaired flOW.)

INFERRED NATURAL RUNOFFnA calculated value of that water which would
have flowed past a specified point on a stream, within a stated period
of time, if its upstream drainage area had not experienced effects
caused by stream diversion, storage, import, export, return flow, or
change in consumptive use caused by man-controlled modifications to
land use. (Sometimes called full nt1tural runoff or unimpaired runoff.)

INFILTRATION--The process whereby water from the surface enters into and
passes downward through soil or rock.

INFILTRATION CAPACITY--The steady rate at which a sol1, when in a given
condition, can absorb water.

INS~LLED CAPACITY (POWER)--The total of the capacities as shown by the
nameplates of simllar kinds of apparatus such as generating units,
turbines, synchronous condensers, transformers, or other equipment in
a station or system.

IN~NGIBLE BENEFITS--Those benefits which, although recognized as having
real value in satisfying human needs or desires, are not fully measur-
able in monetary terms, or are incapable Of such expression in formal
analysis.

INTANGIBLE IlAMAGES--Those damages that cannot be evaluated in monetary
terms, such as loss of life, suffer:tng, etc.

INTERCEPTING DRAIN--A drain constructed to intercept surface or ground-
water flowing tOward the protected area, from higher ground, and to
carry it away from the area.

l-I
