.

1. ~l2,~ _ R."_8,!:.....,_
.6 GREELEY I WICHITA
5.,
38030"

~I

R34 w.
I;COTT

OOO?ln

County maps in the report show the location of well s in the water-
1 eve 1 observat i on network and the 1983-84 water-l eve 1 change, in feet.
A minus (-) sign preceding the number indicates a water-level decline;
no sign indicates a water-level rise.

As an i ndi cator of water-l eve 1 trends, average water-l eve 1 changes
for the four reported areas (fig. 1) were computed for various time
intervals. These average changes are computed only from the wells measured
for the given time interval and do not represent an area-weighted average
of water-l eve 1 changes. In northwestern Kansas, the average water-l evel
decline was 0.6 foot during 1983, and the average rise was 0.9 foot during
1982. The average annual water-level decline was 0.6 foot for the 18-year
period from 1966-83. In west-central Kansas, the average decline
was 0.7 foot during 1983, and 0.2 feet during 1982. For 1966-83, the
average annual decline was 1.5 feet. In southwestern Kansas, the average
water-level decline was 0.4 feet during 1983, and 1.8 feet during 1982.
The average annual decl ine was 1.7 feet during 1966-83. In south-central
Kansas, the average water-level decline was 0.2 foot during 1983, and
0.8 foot during 1982. The average annual decline was 0.4 foot during
1974-83. Water levels declined an average of 0.5 foot during 1983
throughout western and south-central Kansas.

Wells in this report are numbered according to the U.S. Bureau of
Land Management's system of land subdivision. In this system, the first
set of digits of a well number indicates the township; the second set,
the range east or west of the Si xth P ri nci pal Meri di an; and the thi rd
set, the secti on in whi ch the well is situated. The fi rst 1 etter denotes
the quarter section or 160-acre tract within the section; the second, the
quarter-quarter section or 40-acre tract; and the thi rd, the quarter-
quarter-quarter section or 10-acre tract. The letters are designated
A, B, C, and D in a counterclockwise direction beginning in the northeast
quadrant. Because there may be more than one well in a 10-acre tract,
consecutive numbers, beginning with "01," are added in the order in which
data from the wells were collected. Thus, in Greeley County, the number
18S 39W 07BBD 01 indicates that the well is in the SE1/4 NW1/4 NW1/4 sec. 7,
T. 18 S., R. 39 W. (fig. 2).

I
T.
20
b
ow>
<ll<l
l510l
.JZ
8~
185 39W 07BBD 01

8 !5 4 3 2 I
10 II 12
'"
2
2
o "

o 10 20 MILES
I ., " ..
o 10 20 KILOMETERS

Figure 2.--Well-numbering system.

3
