River Control and Operation

Holdover storage regulation for the entire lower
river is provided by Lake Mead, behind Hoover Dal11,
with a gross capacity of nearly 28,5 million acre-feet,
or more than twice the natural yearly runoff of the
river there. Davis DarB, 67 Inites downstream, creates
Lake Mohave, gross capacity 1.8 million acre-feet, and
is used primarily to re-regulare the water released for
power generation at Hoover Dam in accordance with
downstream water requirements in the United States
and Mexico, Parker Dal11, 80 miles below Davis Dam,
is the diversion structure for the Colorado River Aque-
duct. Its reservoir, Lake Havasu, has a gross capacity
of 648,000 acre-feet, and is the farthest major down-

stream regulator of the river's flow. Other structures
on the river below Parker, including Palo Verde Dam
and Imperial D~Ul1, serve mainJ.\.- ~lS diversion controls
and have little or no storage regulating capacities.
Senator "Vash Reservoir, on a tributary upstream from
Imperial Dam, provides for a limited but valuable
amount of additional regubtion,

Control and operation of the main stem of the
Colorado River are in the hands of the U.s, Bureau
of Reclamation, Department of the Interior. Direct
responsibility rests with the Regional Director and
his staff at Boulder City, Nevada, near HoO\'er Dam.
Releases from stomge are made by the Bureau in
accordance with advance schedules supplied periodi-
cally b,' the water agencies and the Republic of
Mexico, Through au advi-
sory board, water users on
both sides of the river con-
sult with the Bureall on
Except in times of SUf-
plus water supply, appar-
ently a thing of the past,
annual releases from Lake
Mead are as nearly as pos-
sible in response to annual
requirements for agricul-
tural, municipal and do-
mestic purposes. Howe\'er,
interim releases for power
generation can vary within
certain limits from the con-
sumptive use schedule be-
cause of the re-regulating
capacity of Lakc Mohave,
