'rhe NarrOl"s Dam would be an earthfill str.ucture about

11,6 feet high with a crest length of 22,100 feet. Three dikes having

a combined length of about 12,700 feet also would be necessary. The

Narro\>ls Reservoir would have a total controlled capacity of 973,000

aere~feet at the top of the flood control pool.

Rights-oi-way adequate for construction and operation and

maintenance of the dam and reservoir, assod.ated relocations, and

for recreation and fish and wildlife developments \'lould require the

acquisition or approximately 36,250 acres or land. Re10cati,on of

the Union Pacific Railroad and State HighHay 144 would be required.

The construction of a fish hatchery and rearing po'nds and the

acquisition and development or the existing Jackson Lake Reservoir,

nOH privately owned, are proposed for outdoor recreation and fish

and wildlife enhancerr, ent. A wildlife management area and rour puh1ic-

,

use recreation areas are also proposed for development.

Because of inadeq111lte water supplies, the areas irrigated within

the lower South Platte River Basin, including the Narrows Unit service

area, have been limited, and the full irrigation potential has failed

to materialize. The frequent lack of sufricient surface water supplies

has caused many irrigators to construct wells for p\mlping ground water

for supplemental irrigation. Water supply shortages have been further

.~intensified by severe droughts, which' cause serious depletions of the

surface water supply and result in a greater demand on the wells.
