.

.

\
..

'^

.

3051

.

of the people leavi.ng the area moved to the large population centers,

thus adding to urban environmental problems.

(2) Adverse environm",nta1 effects. Certain adverse effects on

the environm~nt ~li1l occur with the project. These will include the

inundation by tI,e reservoir of 15.5 miles of natural stream environment

and approximately 15,000 acres of lands. The loss of approximately

1,100 rur bearers and 1,000 ducks annually associated with the habitat

viII be mitigated as a part of the proposed fish aud wildlife development.

There \(Till be no loss of unique archeo10gi.ca1 or geo10gical'features.

The project will require the acquisiti.on of a total of approximately

36,000 acres of predominantly agricultural lands and the dislocation

of about 40 farm units associated thercwith. Three small settlements,

involving about 150 families and one cemetery, will require relocation.

(3) Alternat.ives t.o the proposed action. There is no alternative

~ourse of action to the proposed plan which would create equivalent

'benefits for meeting social, eeonomie, and environmental objectives

/

within the State of Colorado at comparable economic costs.

(It) Relationship of short-term uses versus lonR-term needs. The

resources which would be committed to this'proposed development are

not subject to depletion in the sarr~ sense as are coal or oil deposits.

Yater is a renewable rcsource. L~nd productivity can be maintained

-'--c and enhaneed with proper care while being irrigated. 'rherefore. the

Water and land resources are not lost, nor is their future development

for other purposes having higher values precluded.
