This settling
basin would be designed to remove particles 0.10 millimeter or more in size
to prevent damage to the pumps. Fish screens would keep fish from entering
the pumps.

Physical plant: 2-story building, low-prefile structure, mostly below
original ground surface
18,000 square feet of floor space
13 electrical pumps
Adjacent power substation and parking area'
Maximum vertical lift: 525 feet
Maximum capacity: 430 cubic feet per second
Distance to reservoir: 2.1 miles

I

The water would be conveyed to the reservoir through the proposed RIDGES
BASIN INLET CONDUIT, which would extend up the ridge to the west. It would
consist of 1,,6 miles of concrete and steel pipe 8.5 feet in diameter buried
5 to 10 feet below the ground surface, and of (;.5 mile of a concrete-lined
tunnel. The water supply for Durango would be pumped through this conduit
to a treatment plant and discharged through the DURANGO MUNICIPAL AND INDUS-
TRIAL PIPELINE. The flow to the city would be by gravity. The project, water
supply for the New Mexico cities and the Navajo Tribe would be riverflow
passed by the pumping plant, Ulmer usual conditions., However, whenever riyer-
flow was not sufficient to meet Durango's and these other municipal needs,
water would be released from storage in Ridges Basin Reservoir.

Distance to Information Sign 2: 3.4 miles

o

RIDGES BASIN RESERVOIR SITE

.-.....-

From this point you can see the ,high water line of the reservoir, at an
elevation of 6,964 feet. One marker on this side of the basin and two markers
that can be seen across the valley mark this high water line. The water
surface here would be about 195 feet above your head.

RIDGES BASIN DAM would be located to the east (to the left) in the
constricted part of the valley.

Reservoir capacity: 280,040 acre-feet (over 91 billion gallons)
Maximum surface area: 2,270 acres
3.8 miles long
2 miles wide at widest point
Fishing: Would be stocked with trout
Average annual drawdown: 22 feet
occurring from April through September
Ridges Basin Dam: Earth-fill
313 feet high "_
1,600 feet long at crest

,

Distance to Information Sign 3: 1.5 miles
